Jesus Christ - His Life and Works

The Bible's view on what Jesus did on earth

Jesus prayed to his father “this is life eternal, that they may know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3). Jesus came to do his father’s will (John 6:38). God is greater than Jesus (John 14:28) but they are one in purpose (John 17:11, 21-22).

Jesus was sent by God to give people the chance to have eternal life. He did this by preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God (Mark 1:14, 38). Jesus also performed many miracles which were to show the people that he had been sent by God (John 5:36).

During his three and a half years ministry, Jesus taught how believers were to live their lives. The sermon on the mount recorded in Matthew chapters 5 to 7 is an example of his teaching and covers a wide range of subjects such as anger, loving enemies, prayer, anxiety, and how to enter the Kingdom of God. God’s future kingdom is also the subject of many of his parables (for example Matthew 13).

The people who believed his message and were baptised would be saved from the effect of sin and death but those who didn’t obey Christ would be condemned (Mark 16:15-16). Although many people heard his message, there were few who were willing to take that step (Matthew 7:13-14).

After Christ ascended into heaven the disciples preached the same message (Acts 8:12; 19:8). But before that happened Jesus had to suffer the shame of the cross.
